Sprinklers Or Irrigation – Which Do You Need And Why

The use of irrigation in the lawns of new homes has become a popular trend. There’s something nice about knowing you don’t need to worry about your lawn, that it essentially takes care of itself. Do you need lawn irrigation? Or, are sprinklers sufficient? Well, let’s take a look at both of them, which you might need, and why!

The first factor to consider is the climate you live in and the size of your lawn. There isn’t a single type of irrigation system or sprinkler set for you to choose from, you have options no matter what you decide. Ultimately, you want to make a choice that will ensure your lawn, flowers, and plants are watered and healthy.

Types Of Irrigation

  • A pop-up sprayer – this is a sprinkler, but they are hidden or underground until they are in use. These systems are typically piped underground and one sprayer can water around a 15-foot radius.
  • A pop-up rotor – these cover a much larger area but are much like the pop-up sprayer.
  • Impact – your impact sprinkler will rotate around a large area. It uses an impact bar to water nearby and further away. It covers more ground than both of the options above.
  • Drip irrigation – this is generally used for gardens and flowers as it drip waters the garden. This means it has no reach, so it needs to be located close to the plant that needs to be watered. It’s a cheaper option as it doesn’t need to be piped underground. It is common to experience clogging with this option.
  • Mist-irrigation – this is a low-pressure option similar to the drip. The difference, of course, is it sprays a fine mist. There are perfect for flower beds, as opposed to large lawns.
  • Bubbler irrigation – this can be attached to your outdoor faucet and then run beneath the ground. It tackles the roots of your plant life, but it is not suitable for lawns.

The Benefits

There are many benefits to each of these options. For the pop-up sprayers, there are no hoses causing a trip hazard. It increases the resale value of your home as well. Not to mention the fact that there is less upkeep for underground solutions. Choosing a fully automatic system is ideal, as all you need to do is choose the time and let it run as it will. You don’t need to do anything beyond that. A timer offers consistency for your plants, which is important for growth.

What Works For You?

The right choice for you will depend on your yard. If you have a lawn and flowers, then you might be interested in a combination of both options. However, if you aren’t focused on the lawn, but do have flowers and plants, then an irrigation system is right for you. Likewise, if your focus is on the lawn and you don’t have other plant life, sprinklers are perfect for your needs. Either way, you should see your system as an investment that makes your home more appealing to buyers. Luckily, there are professionals available to answer any questions you might have on the subject. So, which option is suited to you?
